Tomorrow we leave on a 3-month sabbatical. This is something we’ve been dreaming about for more than a decade and planning for a year. Needless to say, we’re excited mixed with a side of fear, anxiety and wonder. Over the next months I hope to share some of our journey. So to begin…what is a sabbatical and why do I get one anyways?
I work for an incredible church that believes in long-term sustainability of its pastors. Coast Hills Community Church is an incredible place to serve God full-time and we are so blessed to be part of this church family. The official statement says:
A sabbatical is intended to provide full-time pastors who have served for an extended period at Coast Hills Community Church with a gift of time away from normal responsibilities and activities to pursue a plan of personal renewal and growth that may combine study, travel, relaxation, education and/or research. More importantly, it is an opportunity for those who have given consistently of their life to refill their own hearts and resources in order that they might continue in effective service to the Lord in this congregation.
So that is our plan. To spend the next three months traveling, relaxing, reading and writing while we wait expectantly on Jesus to refill our hearts and resources so we can return full of life to effectively serve our church family for another long season!
For us, the travel will take us to Brasil, specifically the Southern states of Parana and Santa Catarina. My wife was born in Brasil and our family now has a long history with the country and the work of the Church there. More details on that in the next sabbatical post!
